To upgrade, I took a backup of my database and files first, then ran the automatic upgrade from within WordPress. Some people might advise using FTP to upload the upgraded files, but I felt comfortable doing it this way and didn’t have a problem.

I really like the new hover-menu navigation. I like being able to browse quickly to where I need to go rather than having to click to open a menu first, then selecting the choice from within that menu.

The media section for files and images now contains a drag and drop interface – I like that very much.

And last but not least for developers, there is a new wp_editor() function. The WordPress function reference guide states: ”This function renders an editor in a page in the typical fashion used in Posts and Pages.” I’m pretty excited about this and will be spending time learning how to take advantage of it.

The goals for this site have changed. Initially I wanted to write articles that would help others get started on the path to freelancing. I would write about my own experiences and offer practical advice and information for web designers, graphic artists, and generally any person wishing to embark on their own freelance agency.

But I realize that writing about the practical things such as what type of business structure to choose, or about css and javascript tricks and tips, are somewhat limiting. If the goal is to help on the path to success, then a large part of that is simply to inspire. There is no getting around it – you have to be inspired to reach real success in this. So I will be including not only informational and practical articles, but hopefully articles that inspire and compel readers to action.

Hi I’m Eric and welcome to Digital Design Diary. I am a web developer working for a large company that builds websites, and as I write this first post, I am in the process of transitioning away from the full-time job – working for someone else – to establishing my own freelance design business.

This blog will chronicle that transition from full-time employee to freelancing employer. From taking the first steps to running a thriving design shop, I hope to cover all aspects of what it takes to run a digital-design agency. If you, the reader, have any questions at all, or if you would like to for me to write on any specific topic, please don’t hesitate to contact me!

I love what I do, being involved in digital design, and I want to help others who share the same goal of working for themselves as web designers, developers and graphic artists. If just one blog post of mine provides the encouragement or inspiration someone needs to get started on their own, then my design diary has succeeded.
